At Northwood we feel it vital to not only help our children grow academically, but also to develop their character so they become well-rounded, happy and successful individuals throughout their time at Northwood and beyond. With this in mind we embody our five values as a school and try to instil these in children to support their personal development.
Be Kind
Being Kind means treating others the way you would like to be treated. It’s about using gentle words, helping people when they need it, and showing respect to everyone—friends, teachers, and even people you don’t know well. Kindness also includes small actions like sharing, listening, and including others so no one feels left out. Being kind makes school a happier place. It helps everyone feel safe, valued, and confident. When children practise kindness every day, they build strong friendships, solve problems peacefully, and create a community where everyone can learn and grow together.
Be Brave
At Northwood, being brave means having the courage to try new things, even when they feel a little bit scary. Sometimes things can be difficult and it is okay to get things wrong. By being brave, you are giving your best effort even if you’re not sure you’ll get it right the first time. Bravery doesn’t mean being fearless. It means noticing your worries and choosing to do the right thing anyway. When children practise being brave, they grow more confident, learn from mistakes, and discover that challenges can help them become stronger and more resilient.
Be Respectful
Be Respectful means showing care for people, places, and things. It’s about listening when others speak, using polite words, and treating everyone fairly, even when they are different from you. At Northwood, we have a very diverse community, and we want to ensure that all children learn to be respectful of different cultures and backgrounds regardless of their differences. When children practise respect, they help create a calm, friendly school where everyone feels valued. It encourages kindness, teamwork, and positive relationships, making it easier for everyone to learn and enjoy their time together.
Be Part of a Team
Being part of Team Northwood means working together so everyone can succeed. We want to nurture individuals who listen to others, share ideas, and help each other when things get tricky. Being part of a team also means celebrating everyone’s strengths and when children learn to be team players, they build trust, solve problems more easily, and create a positive classroom where everyone feels included. Teamwork helps the whole school community grow stronger, kinder, and more connected.
Be the Best You Can Be
We believe that Being the Best You Can Be isn’t about being the best, it is about always trying your hardest and believing in yourself. It’s about setting goals, practising new skills, and not giving up when something feels difficult. Being the best you can be doesn’t mean being perfect—it means putting in effort, learning from mistakes, and celebrating your progress. When children aim to be the best they can be, they grow more confident, discover their strengths, and take pride in their achievements. It helps create a school where everyone feels encouraged to learn, improve, and shine in their own way.
