Parents as Partners:
We recognise that education is at its most effective when partnerships exist between home and school. Because of this, developing positive relationships with parents and carers is very important to use. We have a home school agreement which can be viewed below. Please read, discuss with your child and sign it to ensure continuity of expectation between home and school.
We endeavour to provide quality information to parents about their child’s progress and ask that you inform school of anything, which might contribute to his/her well being. We try to keep parents informed of events in school through whole school and year group newsletters and our website. Please take every opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and participate fully in the life of our school.
Home Learning:
Home learning is seen as an opportunity for children to practise and consolidate the skills they have learnt at school. Our main priority for home learning is reading. We encourage children to read for a short while each day and ensure they have access to high quality texts to share with their parents. Throughout school, children will have reading records that will be used by parents and teachers, to comment on pupils reading. We encourage you as parents and carers to use this to further support your child with reading.
In Early Years and Key Stage 1, children will bring two books home with them: one that is matched to their phonological knowledge and one that can be shared with someone at home. Research shows that reading is crucial for child development as it boosts academic performance, vocabulary and emotional wellbeing. We believe that having a strong foundation for reading at home stands children in good stead when further progressing through their academic and personal life. In Key Stage 2, children will continue to take books home to read for pleasure. Children will have autonomy of the books they have access to which can be chosen from their class bookshelves. These bookshelves are regularly updated and refreshed to ensure children consistently have access to high quality literature.
In addition to reading, your child may receive further home learning tasks. This may be to support them with their developing spellings, mathematical understanding or to develop knowledge in further curriculum areas.
In Year 6, children will receive more frequent home learning tasks to support and secure their learning in reading, grammar and maths. This will help them to prepare for their end of year assessments as well as create positive habits for their transition to secondary school.
If you would like further home learning opportunities for your child, please speak to your child’s teacher who will be able to support you with this.
